Understanding Equine Stereotypical Behaviours

Horses are some of the most expressive animals on Earth. From the way they snuffle and nuzzle to the wide range of facial expressions, horses have an extensive vocabulary that communicates their thoughts and feelings. But when a horse exhibits what appears to be abnormal behaviour, it can often be a sign of a deeper problem. Stereotypical behaviours in horses—behaviours that are repetitive or compulsive—are increasingly common and can indicate underlying issues or stress within the animal. For so many horse owners limited turnout is a reality, especially during the winter months and this can lead to horses spending more time in their stables than you might like, which can increase stress.
